Loneliness is dangerous it's addicting. Loneliness is as dangerous as smoking.
'Loneliness epidemic' in the US is as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, according to a top health expert in the country.
According to Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, he was one of the millions of Americans who felt a "deep sense of isolation," according to the BBC.
Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has issued an advisory, saying that social isolation should be taken as seriously as obesity or drug abuse.
The advisory issued by them also states that nearly half of Americans from all walks of life suffer from loneliness.
Vivek Murthy has also outlined a national framework for rebuilding social connectivity.
Loneliness is a disease
Loneliness is also linked to a lack of social contact, lower academic achievement and poor work performance, according to the advisory.
According to research, loneliness increases the risk of premature death by almost 30%, leading to diseases such as diabetes, heart attacks, insomnia and dementia.
This problem has been exacerbated by pandemics like Corona, which has caused many people to limit their social circles.
According to a study, from June 2019 to June 2020, the size of social network participants decreased by an average of 16%.
To combat this, Vivek Murthy calls for collective efforts to change cultural and policy responses.
Vivek Murthy's strategy has six pillars, which include efforts to strengthen social infrastructure in communities and, in part, use public health systems to achieve this goal.
White House press secretary Karen Jean-Pierre said the advisory is part of the Biden administration's broader efforts to address mental health. According to him, May is Mental Health Awareness Month in America.
Although the announcement is intended to increase awareness, no new federal funding has been announced to address the issue.
