Pakistan's former prime minister, Imran Khan, was held captive in Islamabad.

In an unexpected turn of events, PTI chief Imran Khan, who had attended two hearings at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday afternoon, was detained outside the courthouse in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust case .Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, appeared in court in Islamabad on May 9th, 2023 at 14:49 BST to address allegations in a corruption case. As he was being brought into an armored van by numerous security personnel wearing riot gear, Khan was taken into jail.

Imran was detained in connection with the case where it is alleged that the PTI leader and his wife received billions of rupees from a real estate firm in exchange for legalising a laundered amount of Rs50 billion that was discovered and returned to Pakistan by the UK during the previous PTI government, according to a statement from Islamabad police citing Inspector General (IG) Akbar Nasir.

The police chief added that Section 144 had been implemented throughout the capital and that offenders will face consequences while stating that the situation in Islamabad was "normal".

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah claimed that after receiving multiple notices, Imran had neglected to show up in court. He added that Imran was not tortured and stated that the National Accountability Bureau was responsible for Imran's arrest for creating losses to the national budget.

The PTI leader claims that over a hundred cases have been filed against him, ranging from sedition to corruption. Khan has pushed the Sharif administration to hold an early election, saying the coalition that assumed power after he was ousted is "illegitimate".
